Dr Sicelo P Goqo

Dr Sicelo P. Goqo is a senior lecturer in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science where he was also registered part-time for the PhD degree from 2015 – 2018. Dr Goqo’s broad research interests are in applied mathematics but with a particular focus in fluid dynamics and numerical analysis. He has experience in teaching and supervising undergraduates and postgraduates students. He has more than 20 published papers in ISI journals.

He completed his PhD in 2018 which was titled, “Spectral quasilinearization methods for boundary layer and cavity flow problems.” Here we find computational simulation of complex mathematical models that describe the flow of fluids in cavities. The equations are solved using the four modified spectral quasilinearization numerical methods where collocation is implemented independently in space and in time.

Dr Goqo pursued his undergraduate studies majoring in mathematics at the University of North-West. His hard work was rewarded with a scholarship from SANHARP that allowed him to complete his Honours and MSc degrees in Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town. Dr Goqo’s journey would not have been possible if it were not for sponsors such as SANHARP for his undergraduate and NRF Thuthuka fund, TDG and UCDP during the research for his MSc and PhD.

It is from the generosity of these sponsors that gave him an opportunity to travel and present his research in different parts of the world. This has included attending conferences at the University of California, Berkeley where he attended ICCM2016, Kolkata in India where he attended IMBIC2017, Rome, Italy where he attended ICCM2018, Tunisia where he attended the ICAAM2018 conference and Botswana where he attended the SAMSA2018 conference. He has also visited Swaziland and local universities for research collaborations.

During his PhD studies and post-PhD, he has had the opportunity to co-supervise 4 MSc and 1 PhD students with Professor Sibanda to completion, with three of these students graduating with cum laude.  He is currently supervising 2 MSc and 5 PhD students. He also had a postdoc research appointee from January 2019 to December 2020.
