The International Astronautical Federation together with the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), annually host the International Astronautical Congress (IAC). The IAC is an annual meeting of the actors in the discipline of space and consists of plenary sessions, lectures and meetings. In addition there is a large exhibition running concurrently. The International Astronautical Federation and the local organising committee hosted the 62nd International Astronautical Congress in Cape Town, South Africa from 3 to 7 October 2011.
The congress is attended by the agency heads and senior executives of the world's space agencies along with academics, researchers, industry and commerce executives, students and young professionals.
The 2011 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition coincided with this Congress, during which the World Finals were held on 6 October 2011 at the Cape Town High Court. The 2011 Competition had over 40 participating teams: Eight from Europe, ten from North America, including one invited team from South America (Colombia) and 24 from the Asia-Pacific region.
The Faculty of Law of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, was the Runner-Up in the African Round represented by Serena Joy Kalbskopf (Best Oralist) and Petronell Kruger, under the guidance of coach Lourens Grové, an attorney at the Law Clinic at the University of Pretoria.
