International Justice: Are Courts Helpful? An enlightening lecture by Prof John Dugard

Posted on August 30, 2013

After the welcoming addresses of Prof Tyrone Pretorius, Vice-Principal (Academic) responsible for Faculties, Teaching and Learning, University of Pretoria and HE Ambassador André Haspels, Ambassador of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in South Africa, John Dugard’s lecture examined the effectiveness of international Courts in achieving international justice.

Handled expertly, Prof Dugard delivered an illuminating and thought provoking lecture which led to the conclusion that although much has been achieved by the international Courts, there remains a lot more work to be done in order to achieve the vision of world peace. Prof Dugard’s lecture was followed by a response by the Honorable Ebrahim Ebrahim MP, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, who gave insightful comments on Prof Dugard’s position and elucidated the role of international courts from a South African perspective.

Prof Erika de Wet, co-director of ICLA, moderated the Q&A session that followed on the lectures.  She was also the coordinator of this event and commented “that she was pleased by the attendance of the event and the participation of the audience in the Q&A session”.
