Spotlight on role of language in educational development

Posted on October 24, 2013

The conference had a distinct ‘African flavour’, with African story tellers, jazz bands and plenary sessions addressing multi-lingual issues and an African cultural renaissance. The theme for this year was “Opportunity, equity and identity beyond 2015”.

2015 is the end date for the realisation of the internationally agreed Millennium Development goals (MDG). The conference focused on MDG 2: achieving universal primary education; MDG 3: promoting gender equality and empowering women and MDG 8: developing a global partnership for development.

The British council hosted the occasion. Representatives of the official language agency of the African Union (ACALAN), PRAESA, a multilingual education project at the University of Cape Town, involved in the intellectualisation of African languages as well as the European Union contributed immensely to the intellectual success of the conference.
