Risk and reward in Africa

“The African story has changed, the last decade has been the best on record and this year we expect Africa to grow in excess of 5%,” Dr Lyal White, director of the Centre for Dynamic Markets, told a GIBS Forum looking at the risks and opportunities of doing business in Africa. “On paper, doing business in Africa looks great, but time and again companies get burned in difficult and often ambiguous environments.” Markets like Nairobi, Kenya and Lagos, Nigeria are exciting, said White, but they do come with a big risk factor. The question is how do companies – both international firms and African concerns looking to expand on the continent – mitigate these risks? Dave Butler of Control Risks and Jason Krause of International SOS South Africa offered some pragmatic insights around doing business in Africa; replete with tips, advice and legitimate concerns.
