#TuksFootball: Tuks's 'dogfight' to qualify for the Varsity Football semi-final set to continue

Posted on August 30, 2019

Tuks notched up their most convincing win in the Varsity Football Tournament last night by beating UKZN 3-0 at home, but still, there is no guarantee they will get to contest the semi-finals.

The Tournament is boiling down to a classic scenario of musical chairs with no one knowing who will be seated and who will be left standing when the "music" stops.

After last night's results, six teams are vying for the four semi-final slots. So there is still all to play for.

As things stand at the moment, Northwest and Kovsies are the joint log leaders with 11 points, followed by UWC, TUT and Tuks on 10 points with UJ sixth on seven points.

Next week is undoubtedly going to be a do or die scenario as Tuks takes on Kovsies, UWC plays Northwest and TUT faceoff against CUT. UJ is sort of guaranteed three points as they are playing UKZN who is the only team not to have won any game so far.

In the end, everything might yet boil down to goal difference. For this reason, Katlego Motlhatsang who captains Tuks is relieved that his team got to score three goals last night. It means at long last Tuks has managed to wipe out their goal deficit.

His only worry is that Tuks might regret not having scored at least one or even better two more goals.

"We certainly had the opportunities to score more goals. On a rough count, I would say we missed five definite chances in the first half. We might still end up paying dearly for some of our 'Tomfoolery' on the field."

At halftime, the score was 0-0. Whatever Tlisane Motaung (Tuks head coach) had said during the break seemed to have been taken to heart by the players as Tuks grabbed the match by the scruff of the neck.  Mathuane Selotola scored in the 60th minute with Jerry Tlou netting the ball in the 63rd minute. Selotola scored for a second time 28 minutes later.

Giovanni Idi (Tuks goalkeeper) left for the field for change having just reason to smile as for the first time in this Varsity campaign Tuks has not conceded a single goal.

Motlhatsang is under no illusion as to what needs to be done next Thursday.

"It is not going to be easy. We need to be ruthless. We need goals. The more, the better."

Kickoff at Tuks will be at 16:00.
