TuksFootball fans could be forgiven after their team lost last night at home against TUT for the umpteenth time in the Varsity Tournament that some things never change.
Last year's Varsity Champions managed to beat Tuks 1-0. In doing so, they continued their unbeaten streak against Tuks in away Varsity encounters.
If the fans were disappointed about the result, they should realise how much the players hurt. The Tuks striker, Nhlanhla Mabaso, is devasted.
"I am still asking myself how we again lost. I have no answers. I guess at the end of the day it is football. Sometimes what you strive to achieve is not meant to happen, and there is nothing you can do about it.
"We certainly had enough opportunities to score goals. No instead let me rephrase it. I certainly had chances to score, and I did not. It is hitting me hard because playing for Tuks means so much to me. All I can say is that I will work on it, not to make the same mistakes again. The same go for my teammates.
"I will mark my words, put the ball into the back of the net. That is what I am on the field for. As a striker, it is my responsibility. Once we start to score goals, there is going to be no stopping us. Luckily it is only the start of the tournament. There are still six more games to play."
Tuks's captain, Simbongile Njokwe, was quite honest in his assessment as to what happened between the lines.
"In spite of playing good football, we lacked in what is the most crucial facet of the game, and that is to score goals. That, in the end, remains the bottom line in football.
"Last night's result is not all negative. As captain, I am happy with how the 'boys' did especially considering that we fielded quite an inexperienced team. I can honestly say that everyone play to the best of their ability. I am confident that from now onwards, we shall continue to play with more confidence."
Next Thursday, Tuks is playing UWC at home. Kickoff is at 18:30.
