Both sets of players started the match cautiously with very little goalmouth action. In the 32nd minute Mnyamane was able to round one defender but could not create the angle for a shot, allowing the defence to recover and clear their lines.
Wits found the opener when in the 39th minute AmaTuks failed to clear their lines from a Wits corner and the loose ball fell to Kwakman at the far post. He took a low shot through the crowded penalty box and the ball deflected off the far post upright into the net.
AmaTuks searched for an immediate replay and won a corner which found Massa at the near post and his well-directed header forced a reflex save from Josephs.
Wits took the 1-0 lead into the half time break.
In the 56th minute Wits launched a counter and Shongwe delivered a cross which found Vilakazi who beat Kekana to the ball to slot the ball past Arubi with his first touch to double the lead for the home team.
In the 63rd minute had an even bigger mountain to climb after Botes took a shot from outside the box to find the third goal for the hosts. Wits continued to press forward with no replay from AmaTuks.
“It was not an ideal result tonight, we would have liked to advance in the competition but I guest Wits were the better team on the night. We dearly welcome the break, we will use it to regroup and work on a few things and hopefully players will have a bit of time to fully recover from the niggles. Our first match back from the break is against Celtics and that is going to be a tough encounter so we need to be sharp when we go there”; said Coach Sammy.
