AmaTuks started off strongly in the game with an attacking strategy led by Niang. They took the lead 10 minutes into the match through a Niang header, from a left wing cross by Lionel Mutizwa.
Swallows equalised in the 21st minute through a Katlego Mashego goal. Swallows were awarded a free kick on the right wing near the corner flag. Lerato Chabangu, an AmaTuks protégé took the free kick which by passing the ball to Katlego Mashego whose shot was deflected by an AmaTuks player past the goalkeeper, Washington Arubi to make it 1-1.
AmaTuks were not demoralised but inspired to launch attack after attack to get a goal back. The hard work paid off in the 39th minute when a cross by Mpho Maruping from the AmaTuks right wing was met with a tremendous and well placed header into the top right corner of the Moroka Swallows goal by Mame Niang to go into a 2-1 lead just before half time.
Swallows came back rejuvenated at the beginning of the 2nd half and levelled the score again in the 78th minutes through a Bennet Chenene goal. However, Swallows’ celebrations were cut short by Mpho Maruping in the 82nd minute when he managed to break away from the Swallows line of defence to score AmaTuks’ third and final goal for a 3-2 AmaTuks win.
Afterwards, Coach Steve Barker commended his players for a job well done on the day, and praised them for their composure when the going got tough. He said:
“Credit goes to the players, they showed character and I’m proud of them. Victory gives us more belief, but there will be testing times ahead and it will not get any easier”.
