Varsity derby ends goalless

The game started off with Bidvest Wits getting the first chance at goal in the first minute. Papy Faty got an opportunity, but his close range shot was comfortably saved by AmaTuks goal keeper Washington Arubi.

There was not much action thereafter, as both teams could not unlock each other’s defence. In the 20th minute, AmaTuks failed to clear a free-kick, the rebound fell to Bidvest Wits’ Sibusiso Vilakazi who shot high over the cross bar from just outside the box.

In the 28th minute, AmaTuks right back Ramahlwe Mphahlele released a shot from 30 yards, but it fell into the hands of Bidvest Wits keeper Ryan Harrison.

AmaTuks continued with attacking, in the 35th minute Mame Niang got a chance when he won a high ball between the Bidvest Wits defence. He controlled the ball and managed to release a left footed shot, which was again saved by the Bidvest Wits keeper.

Five minutes into the second half, Dipsy Selolwane and Ramahlwe Mphahlele coordinated a nice move in the midfield, with the final shot left to David Radebe which was easily saved by the Bidvest Wits keeper.

In the 78th minute, Niang headed the ball to Selolwane who released a powerful shot, forcing the Bidvest Wits keeper to make a save, parrying the ball over the bar for a corner.

The last few minutes of the match belonged to AmaTuks. In the 84th minute Niang came close to scoring with a header from a corner kick.

Both teams had to share the spoils on the day, as the University derby ended in a goalless draw.
