The match sees the conclusion of the Varsity Football Tournament that has been in action for the past two (2) months. Eight (8) institutions (Tuks, Wits, UWC, UFS, NWU, TUT, NMMU, UCT) have been hard at it to reach the finals and be crowned the inaugural and 2013 Varsity Football Champions.

UP-Tuks I has performed exceptionally well in the tournament. The team has won five (5) matches out of seven (7) that have been played in the group stages with only one (1) loss to TUT and one (1) draw against NMMU.   The team qualified for a home semi-final when it defeated North West University (Mahikeng Campus) 1 – 0 in Mahikeng on 27 August 2013 to finish second on the log behind Tshwane University of Technology.

The semi-final match was played against North West University (Mahikeng Campus) who finished third on the league log. UP – Tuks I beat North West University (NWU) 1-0 again in the semi-finals played in front of an enthusiastic crowd of supporters on Monday 09 2013.
