Visiting lecturer from the University of Lleida, Catalunya, Spain

Dr Esther Pujolràs Noguer visited the English Department for the week of 26-30 September 2022, on a teaching exchange as part of the University of Pretoria’s Erasmus+ Exchange Programme with the University of Lleida in Spain.

She delivered the first Eng 120 lecture of the final quarter, on the intense and ongoing debates surrounding the critical reception of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, as part of Prof Corinne Sandwith’s lectures on the novella. Dr Pujolràs Noguer’s lecture focused in particular on Chinua Achebe’s still-remarkable essay, ‘An Image of Africa’, Edward Said’s PhD thesis and later reflections, and a thought-provoking interview with Achebe conducted by Caryl Phillips.

On 29th September, Dr Pujolràs Noguer and her colleague Dr Felicity Hand, from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, presented a research paper at the Departmental Research Seminar. The presentation, ‘Mourning and Resilience in Indian Ocean Life Writing’, introduced their co-authored book project of the same name.
