Money Smart Week South Africa

Posted on October 10, 2018

To achieve its policy objectives and education mandate, National Treasury and the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) established the National Consumer Financial Education Committee (NCFEC). The objective of the NCFEC is to foster coordination and consistency across various consumer financial education initiatives with other stakeholders. One of the projects of the NCFEC is called Money Smart Week South Africa. On 8 October 2018 a community engagement project in the form of a conference and exhibition day was held at the UNISA main campus in Pretoria as part of the Money Smart Week project. Charlotte van Sittert, heading the Clinic’s short courses and research section, addressed delegates on garnishee orders (or emoluments attachment orders as it is described in the Magistrates’ Court Act). She provided practical advice to delegates who currently have garnishee orders against their salaries and explained the impact of the changes to the garnishee order process in terms of the recent amendment to legislation governing this method of debt collection.
