The Department of Library Services at the University of Pretoria cordially invites you to a webinar on Open Access Publishing and Article Processing Charges (APCs), as part of a series of webinars themed Shifting the boundaries of your research impact.

The scholarly communication landscape has undergone significant changes since the first scientific journal was published in 1665. With the international movement to open science and open access publishing, traditional subscription models have been challenged with more complexed business models. Among the biggest challenges of open access is article-processing charges (APCs). In this presentation will include a discussion of different open access publishing models, as well as issues related to authors’ rights. A large part of the discussion will also focus on initiatives and support provided by the university and the library to assist the UP research community in making their work available through Open Access publishing.

Presenter: Mrs Marguerite Nel

Marguerite Nel started her career at the University of Pretoria in 1997 at the Veterinary Science Library on the Onderstepoort Campus. She obtained her Master’s degree in Information Science in 2015 and remains part of UP’s Department of Information Science as a PhD candidate. In 2017 she moved to the Hatfield campus to take up the position as Head of Library Technical Services. This unit is responsible for the acquisition and management of information resources. She currently administrates the Open Access Fund for Article Processing Charges in the Library.
