Message regarding the lifting of COVID-19 regulations

24 June 2022

Dear UP Community

After an unprecedented time in our history, lasting more than two years, I’m glad to say that we can finally do away with the COVID-19 restrictions, including the limitations on gatherings, which impacted all our activities for too long. This means we can start planning to return to normal and resume contact teaching and learning. To this end, I have already requested faculty management to put plans in place to enable the return of all students to in-person classes when the second semester commences on 25 July 2022. More details will be communicated by the different faculties.

The past two plus years were difficult, and some of us have lost family members, friends and colleagues. But despite this, and thanks to your resilience, we have endured and are now able to look back on this time and appreciate our new-found freedom. We should use this opportunity to reflect on the lessons we have learnt and take what we can from these to build a healthy and safe community where everyone can thrive and succeed.

I believe that we have emerged stronger and want to thank you for your commitment, hard work and passion that enabled us to continue with the academic programme under trying circumstances. Let’s make the most of the changes and start the new semester with renewed energy.

It’s important to remember that while the regulations have been dropped, the COVID-19 virus is still with us and can cause serious harm. Let’s remain vigilant and accept responsibility for our own health. The University will continue to provide hand sanitiser at entrances to venues and I recommend members of our community continue wearing masks in crowded areas or at any time when they feel it is in the interest of their health and safety. Masks are good protection, not just against COVID-19 but also against many other winter ailments.

Persons who are unwell are requested to remain at home until recovered, and those who have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus but remain asymptomatic are asked to stay at home for five days to limit the possible spread of the virus.

For our students and staff who are busy with examinations, I want to wish you good luck and all the best. When you go on your winter break, please stay safe and look after yourselves.

I look forward to welcoming you all back to campus for the second semester.

Kind regards,

Prof Tawana Kupe

Vice-Chancellor and Principal
