We find ourselves in unchartered territory and in very uncertain times. To assist the UP community in navigating the way ahead, colleagues in the ‘psyche’ sciences and helping professions will be sharing thoughts and advice on how to ensure and strengthen mental well-being in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Post 2 in this series is written by Professor Tharina Guse, Counselling Psychologist and Head of the Department of Psychology, University of Pretoria.
While it may seem frivolous to talk about well-being and happiness in the context of the tragedies surrounding the coronavirus outbreak, it is essential to harness our positive psychological resources during times of crises. It is possible to create small moments of happiness in your everyday life. Doing so will foster the experience of positive emotions that are important in building our resilience and assisting with coping with stress. Some practical suggestions for enhancing well-being include the following:
Taking charge of our emotional well-being can help us and those around us to deal with this uncertain time, growing stronger together.
