Division spotlight: Amie Hunter

The Communication Management Division will feature the professional life of its staff on a regular basis. This week’s spotlight is on Amie Hunter.
 
Amie is currently a lecturer in Communication Management at the University of Pretoria and boasts an inspiring 34-year career in the communication management and public relations industry. She initially started out as a broadcaster for the SABC in Johannesburg in 1974. Five years ago she flourished with the establishment of her own communication management consultancy, Amie Hunter Communication.
 
Her positions over the ensuing years were within private, public and parastatal organisations, which included working as a journalist, editor and manager in public relations and corporate communication and as a lecturer at tertiary institutions in the fields of public relations, media and journalism. She is currently a lecturer at the University of Pretoria. 

Amie’s key performance areas over the years included:
  • Research in corporate communication and public relations;
  • brand development and positioning;
  • the development of communication strategies;
  • the implementation, monitoring and measurement of communication plans and integrated marketing communication projects and campaigns;
  • writing, editing and/or proofreading for a wide range of media and corporate publications;
  • managing human resources and budgets of public relations/corporate communication units; and
  • the development of a communication model for the restructuring of a communication function and responding to client and organisational communication needs.
 
Amie established Amie Hunter Communication as a sole proprietor in 2006 and worked with industry colleagues in complementing skills and expertise, which ensured efficient delivery of services to clientele and stakeholders.
 
Services offered included:
  • Communication management planning and implementation oversight;
  • staff mentoring;
  • content writing, editing and proofreading for business and corporate publications;
  • promotional material;
  • below-the-line media and website; and
  • intranet content planning, writing and refreshing. 
 
Amie’s work experience is supported by a BA (English and Sociology) degree, BTech (Public Relations Management) diploma, and BComHons (Communication Management) bridging course toward her current MCom studies, as well as professional accreditation in public relations (APR) through PRISA.
