#TuksChess: Studios @Burnett and Radiography crowned new TuksChess Kings and Queens

Posted on September 10, 2018

On the 7th of September 2018, TuksChess invited University of Pretoria residences and faculties to a thrilling TuksRes Chess League at the Olienhout-Boekenhout Shared Study Centre. A record 20 teams showed up to the event of which 19 were men’s team including Mopanie, Maroela, Kollege, Taaibos, Boekenhout, Olienhout, Blossom’s Delight, Student Centre GM’s, NatHouse, Drageana, Eastwood Village, TuksVillage, Hatfield Studios, Kiaat, Studio @Burnett, House Jacaranda, Onderstepoort, EBIT, and Radiography (ladies). The team were divided into groups four A to D (with 5 teams per group). Each team consisted of five players and in each round, the team that won the most games in each would get 1 point altogether, ½ point for having equal wins, and 0 points for having the least win. Only two teams with the most points in each group proceeded to the quarterfinals, then semi-finals and the winners would be determined thereafter in the finals.

The day started off rather slowly but excitement built on as the tournament proceeded. Radiography was crowned winners of the ladies’ section as they were the only lady’s team. Radiography, however, did participate in the tournament against the men’s teams. From group A, the two teams that proceed to the quarterfinals were EBIT and Boekenhout A, these teams showed the most flair in the group stage beating the other teams by a great margin. The teams that proceeded into the quarterfinals from group B were Taaibos and Student Centre GM’s, Group C (Onderstepoort and Olienhout); Group D (Studios @Burnett and Eastwood Village).

From the quarterfinals, the four teams that proceeded to the semis were EBIT, Studios @Burnett, Onderstepoort, and Olienhout (after playing an intense derby game against Boekenhout). The highlight game of the tournament was Alvin’s (Olienhout) draw with Mfundo Masiya (Studios @Burnett – and came second in the University Sports South Africa Chess Championships). That was Mfundo’s first dropped point in an official game since joining TuksChess. Mfundo’s drawn game didn’t make much of a difference since the winners of the competition was Studios @Burnett, who beat Olienhout 4-1 in the final match. EBIT beat Onderstepoort 3-2 in the 3rd and 4th playoffs. It was good for TuksChess to see such a good turn-up to the tournament and big shout out goes to Onderstepoort Olienhout, Mopanie and Boekenhout who have consistently participated in the TuksRes Chess League since its inauguration in 2011. TuksChess would like to thank all the players that participated in the event, you made the event successful and very enjoyable. We would like to thank Olienhout (Leon Joseph ) for hosting this tournament.
