#TuksChess: Mopanie and Erika crowned Chess Kings and Queens at the TuksRes Festival.

Posted on August 01, 2017

TukRes initiated a fun-filled Inaugural Res Festival where the residences of the University of Pretoria locked horns in various sporting codes on Saturday, 29th July 2017.

Chess was one of the codes offered at the tournament. The men’s teams that participated in the tournament were Vividus Men, Sonop, Kiaat, Maroela, Hatfield Studios, Olympus, Mopanie, Boekenhout, TuksNaledi and Olienhout. The ladies teams were Zinnia, Erika, TuksNaledi and Inca.

The tournament consisted of men’s and ladies groups. The ladies teams were all placed in one group, while the men’s teams were separated into four groups. Each team in the group played against all the other teams in the same group (round robin). Every game each player won, a point was added to that team. The two teams with the highest points after the group stages moved further in knock-out semi-final rounds. Each round was timed to 15 minutes per player.

Congratulations to Mopanie and Erika for being the TuksChess 2017 champions, by winning all their games from group stages to knock-out stages. In the men’s section, Boekenhout and Olienhout were placed second and third, respectively. And in the ladies section, Inca and Zinnia were placed second and third, respectively.
