#TuksChess: May 2016 Blitz Tournament Results

Posted on May 18, 2016

On the 14th May 2016, TuksChess hosted a Blitz Tournament which was held at Sci-Enza, University of Pretoria, Hatfield Campus. The tournament was organised as part of the USSA 2016 preparations.

A blitz chess game is a game where players are given a 5 minute time constraint thus creating some kind of pressure for each player. The aim of this tournament was to help players to cope under pressure. The prize of the winner of the tournament was R 500.00. The tournament was attended by 16 players (15 players were from TuksChess) and a Sevilla programme was used to determine rounds and games.

Three top (+-1600-1800 rating) TuksChess players came through to challenge for the ‘Winner Takes All’ tournament and any of them could have been expected to take the crown. The tournament started slowly in the first three rounds as the seeded players managed to prove their worth. Changes came in from the fourth round with Winston Jimu giving up his chase to Carpediem Madiba. This quickly became a two horse race between Jacqui Grobbelaar and Carpdiem. A surprise guest player (Alwin Robin) changed the fate of the tournament when he beat Jacqui in the 5th round. After the 5th Round Carpediem and Alwin were tie on 1st position with 5 points each.

A tie-breaker had to be played to decide the winner of the day. With Carpediem having beaten Alwin in the swiss tournament and with him having a higher rating, many would have thought he would win the prize but Alwin went on to claim victory. TuksChess would like to congratulate Alwin Robin for winning the TuksChess Blitz Tournament.
