The DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE-MaSS)

The DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE-MaSS) brings together pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics researchers from 24 Node Institutions around South Africa.

The Centre focuses on advancing cross-disciplinary research topics and  developing national capacity in the scarce fields of mathematical and statistical sciences. Our mandate relates to Research, Education and Training, Information Brokerage, Service Rendering, and Networking. The Centre also hosts and funds events throughout the year.

Be sure to visit our exhibit this year at the SAMSA conference, and talk to our Team about our funding opportunities, community engagement, breakthrough MaSS research, and our commitment to social justice in South Africa.

SACNASP

SACNASP is the legislated regulatory body for natural science practitioners in South Africa. The natural sciences encompass a wide range of scientific fields covering all of the basic sciences and many of their applied derivatives. Auburn University

Auburn University is located in Auburn, Alabama in the southeastern United States. The current total enrollment is over 31,000 students. Auburn offers over 150 majors in thirteen colleges and schools and is designated as an R1 institution with “very high research activity” by The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science in Mathematics, the Master of Science in Statistics, the non-thesis Master of Applied Mathematics, the Master of Probability and Statistics, and the Doctor of Philosophy (with concentrations in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics). The Masamu Program is administered by the SPARK STEM Institute at Auburn University, which works to increase college and workforce readiness and STEM degrees obtained by underserved and  underrepresented groups.

The Masamu Program

The SAMSA-Masamu Program’s primary goal is to enhance research in mathematical sciences and related areas through promotion of international research collaboration. A key component of the Masamu Program is the Masamu Advanced Study Institute (MASI) and Workshop Series in mathematical sciences and related areas, which provides a platform for such collaboration. The Masamu Program has created a Collaborative Research Network consisting of over 80 research mathematicians and scientists from around the world, grouped into research teams in pure and applied mathematics that attend the annual MASI and Workshops and SAMSA Conferences. Other activities include research workshops, career development workshops, STEM education workshops, colloquia, and faculty exchange/study abroad programs.

Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM)

The Institute for Pure & Applied Mathematics (IPAM) is a math institute at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. Over 2,000 visitors per year attend its workshops, long programs, student research programs, summer schools, and other programs. IPAM sponsors programs that bring together researchers from different disciplines or from different areas of mathematics, with the goal of sparking interdisciplinary collaboration that continues long after the IPAM program ends. Supporting the careers of women and minority mathematicians and scientists is an important component of IPAM’s mission.
