Workshop 1: Online assessment for teacher trainees

The workshop will largely be participatory, where group activities will be done, followed by presentations and discussions. Some tools will be demonstrated, and participants will be given the opportunity to practice using these tools.

TITLE: ONLINE ASSESSMENT FOR TEACHER TRAINEES

Description

This half-day workshop will critically examine possible effective online assessment strategies for teacher trainees. It will explore ICT-supported online assessment approaches and tools available for the varying African contexts.

Participants will share innovative approaches to designing assessment activities that enable teacher trainees to innovatively articulate and demonstrate the skills learnt. Some of the alternative online assessment approaches to be explored include proctored exams, take-home papers, open-book exams, portfolios, reflective journals, group/collaborative assignments, video/audio recordings, podcasts, blogs and claims. The quality and authenticity of online assessment will also be discussed. Also to be discussed will be ways of ensuring teacher trainees’ readiness for online assessment, knowing that this is critical in the African setting, where computer literacy, ICT skills and reliable internet connectivity vary greatly.

The workshop will largely be participatory, where group activities will be done, followed by presentations and discussions. Some tools will be demonstrated, and participants will be given the opportunity to practice using these tools.

Requirements for participants

To benefit from the workshop, participants are encouraged to have laptops, some resources for a course or courses they facilitate, and any other online assessment-related resource(s) and/or tool(s) they may wish to share with colleagues.
