General information on courses

The Centre for Faith and Community presents a series of courses for community and church leaders, pastors, non-profit workers, and the general public, aimed at equipping people for the work of healing, ministry and empowerment in their communities. The courses are designed around the most pressing training needs, assessed through on-going research in communities. In this way the Centre ensures that the content of courses remains relevant to the questions  and challenges of the day.

CLUSTERS

The Centre offers courses in 4 interconnected clusters:

  • Leadership Studies
  • Healing and Counselling Studies
  • Organizational & Congregational Studies
  • Urban and Community Transformation Studies.

A person who does not have a Grade 10 or equivalent qualification, are required first to complete the introductory courses that are also listed below. No previous training is required for persons who want to enroll for the introductory courses.

Note: Persons who are entitled to enroll for the basic courses (i.e. persons with Grade 10 or higher) but who did not receive any theological training in the past, are also encouraged to do the introductory courses first, even though it is not compulsory.

  • Basic Courses (short & long): At least Grade 10 or an equivalent is required.
  • Advanced Courses: A Grade 12 and at least a two or three year diploma or a university degree is required.
  • Programmes (12 to 18 months): A Grade 12 and at least a two or three year diploma or a University degree is required. In order to use these programmes as course work towards a postgraduate qualification, see below.

  • Post-graduate studies: Students who qualify to register for a Post-Graduate Doiploma, Honours Degree or a Masters Degree at the Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, can offer any of the Programmes (12-18 months) for credits into these courses.
  • The credits will be awarded on a case by case basis

DESIGNED TO EMPOWER

A large part of the Centre’s work is to provide “in service” training to practicing community leaders, ministry workers and pastors who did not have the opportunity of formal training in the past, or who received only limited training. The basic courses especially were designed for this purpose.  These courses can be taken by all members of communities or churches who would like to improve their knowledge and skills for the community action, change-making or ministry that they are involved in.

DURATION OF COURSES

  • Basic Courses: Offered over 3 days or over one year with two weeks of classes to attend over a period of 6 months
  • Advanced Courses: Offered between 3 and 10 days
  • Programmes: Seven (7) of the advanced long courses are offered over 12 to 18 month periods. During the two years, there are five / six weeks of class attendance as well as prescribed books to read and assignments to complete.

PROFESSIONAL CREDITS

Our courses are designed as training units (TU) and in specific cases these training units can qualify as professional units (PU) and be translated into CPD points. You can enquire about CPD points at our office. In order to access some of these credits the students will be required to register with the Professional Body for Religious Practitioners, called the Association for Christian religious Practitioners (ACRP) in order to utilize some of our credits.

METHOD OF TEACHING:

  • Contact weeks: Differs from course to course but combining interactive lectures with group discussions in a ‘seminar setting’. In some courses there is a larger emphasis on site visits, case studies, and “real life” engagements.
  • On-line: We offer some online course and some contact courses might include online possibilities.
  • Preparation: Students need to prepare by reading prescribed material. For advanced courses the number of pages is 3200, and for M students, approximately 4500. For advanced short courses the number of pages is approximately 1000. For basic courses at least 500 pages of study material will be prescribed.
  • Evaluation: Evaluation is done through assignments (homework) as well as open book tests at the beginning and a brief ‘memory teaser’ at the end of each contact week. Tests are in written or oral format.
