Extending our expertise to service Africa

Business Enterprises at University of Pretoria (Pty) Ltd (BE at UP) was recently awarded an air quality monitoring study for the proposed Kudu Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station at Uubvlei, Namibia.

BE at UP’s main role is to carry out an independent monitoring study involving sampling and analysing the air quality at Uubvlei where a CCGT power station will be established, as part of the Kudu Power Project. The 800 megawatt CCGT will be powered by natural gas and was created to respond to the amplified demand for power in southern Africa and to curb Namibia’s import of energy from the already strained South African power grid.

The task that faces the BE at UP specialists is the assessment of the climate and air quality conditions on the site which will inform the design process and long-term effective operation of the proposed Kudu power station. The project team will support and train applicable staff and develop software tools for data analysis to continue evaluating the air quality conditions in the region after the end of the project. The completion of the project will be done in close collaboration with the Kudu power station staff.

This project complements BE at UP’s strategy for Africa.
