About Paediatric Surgery

Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria is the referral centre for children with surgical diseases from northern Gauteng and Mpumalanga. A whole range of paediatric surgery services is provided. About 1400 children are operated on each year in close pre- and postoperative collaboration with other paediatric specialties, including cardiology, gastroenterology, neonatology and oncology.

Children with paediatric surgical problems not requiring highly specialised supportive services are operated on at Kalafong Hospital in the western part of Pretoria. In addition to the general paediatric surgery ward, the hospital also has another 10-bed ward dedicated to children with burns. This service is provided with the help of the Kalafong Paediatric Department.

Despite limited resources, we are committed to providing the best possible care to children who often come from very poor segments of our population.

Beyond service delivery, the department is also involved in the training of students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The academic training programme for registrars is well established.
