#TuksFootball: UP-Tuks plays to goalless draw against NWU

Posted on August 14, 2017

A goal, a goal! My ‘kingdom’ for a goal!

Tlisane Motaung, head coach of UP-Tuks, could be forgiven if this adapted Shakespearian quote crossed his mind after Thursday night’s Varsity Football game against NWU in Potchefstroom.

When the final whistle blew after an enthralling 90-minute battle, the score was 0-0. The result means that UP-Tuks is one of only two teams who have yet to record a victory in the Varsity Tournament. The other being UFH.

Of slightly more concern is the fact that UP-Tuks has so far only managed to score one goal in three games and it is certainly not for lack of trying. Last night both teams had opportunities to snatch all three points.

According to Motaung, it is interesting to note that in UP-Tuks’s last two games the Player of the Match-award went to the opposition goalkeeper. It proves that UP-Tuks is capable of setting up goal scoring opportunities testing the opposition goalkeeper’s abilities to the utmost.

“If we are not scoring we are not gonna win a game,” is Motaung’s frank assessment.

“I can honestly say I am concerned as to why we are not able to score goals, especially considering that at the USSA we scored 15 goals in total and now suddenly in the Varsity Tournament we are battling to find the back of the net.”

In spite of not yet winning a game, Motaung is far from despondent.

“At the moment we need luck, and we have to create it by all means. In all fairness, we played the stronger teams, so I am hoping that we will be able to collect six points in our next two games. If we do, we will have a realistic chance to qualify for the semi-finals.”
