UP Fine Arts student scoops the merit award at Barclays l’Atelier art competition

The Barclays L’Atelier had their 30th opening and award ceromony on the 15th of July this year where Nina Kruger was awarded as merit prize winner.  This year young artists from Botswana, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia were competing for the award. Kruger, a Final year Fine Art student, was awarded the 2nd Merit Award for her work Those Forgoten.  The work which is made out of wood and gelatin questions how people destroy natural elements without  thinking about the after effects that it may have on the environment.  Kruger portrays the relationship of both human and natural elements in her carved wooden sculptures.

Four current students and two alumni of the Department of Visual Arts made the cut of  the top 100 finalists. These are Daandrey Steyn (Top 10), Izak Buys, Marli Steyl, Odette Graskie, Roxette Malala and Leandré le Roux.

Six of the finalists in the Sasol New Signatures competition, currently on show at the Pretoria Art Museum hails from the Department of Visual Arts. These are namely Leandré le Roux, Marli Steyl, Matilda Engelblik, Minien Hattingh, Roxy Malala and Barry van der Westhuizen.  The exhibition runs til the 4th of October 2015.
