Professional and academic experience

Obtained the following academic qualifications: BVSc in 1976 ( Massey , New Zealand ), MS in Veterinary Virology in 1979 ( Missouri , USA ) and a PhD in Comparative Pathology in 1983 (UC Davis, USA).

Served for more than 10 years as Chair of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, School of Veterinary Medicine , UC Davis, USA and during this time acted several times as acting Dean of their School.

Supervised/co-supervised many PhD and MSc students studying equine viral diseases (e.g. equine viral arteritis, West Nile and African horse sickness) and other diseases of economical importance such as bluetongue and Rift Valley fever.

As principal investigator he has been successful in obtaining more than 50 research grants from a wide variety of agencies / foundations totalling more than US $ 5 million to support his research and postgraduate training activities.

Frequent expert advisor to international organizations including the World Animal Health Organization (OIE) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and has served on the steering committees of several international symposia on virus diseases.
