Biography

Henriette van Heerden is a professor in the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (DVTD) at UP.  At DVTD she is part of research projects in zoonotic diseases, primarily focusing on anthrax and brucellosis in livestock and wildlife.   The research projects are multidisciplinary including bacteriology, immunology, ecology, epidemiology and molecular biology characterization of brucellosis and anthrax as well as anthrax vaccine development consequently linking national and international collaborations.  The research projects also involve community engagement projects using brochures and posters developed for zoonotic diseases (https://www.up.ac.za/audiovisual-products/article/258882/posters/) to educate the general public and stakeholders.

Professional and academic experience

She joined the ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary institute in 2000 as a researcher and started her academic career in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Johannesburg  in 2003. In January 2008, she moved to the Department of Veterinary Tropical Disease.
