He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort, where he teaches mainly Ectoparasitology (external parasites) at the undergraduate level and ticks and tick-borne diseases at the post-graduate level. Prior to joining the Faculty in 1997, he was employed as senior researcher in the Protozoology Section at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute for 13 years, where he was involved with the production of the blood-based vaccines for bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis, and his main research field of interest was the epidemiology of theileriosis in cattle and wildlife.
Twelve years as Research Veterinarian at Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute. Ten years as Senior Lecturer Ectoparasitology, DVTD, UP.
Ectoparasitology and Ticks and tick-borne diseases of domestic and wild ruminants
Current research interests revolve around the epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne diseases in wild and domestic ruminants, including tick biosystematics, and characterisation and diagnosis of tick-borne haemoparasites.
Main Research Project:
An assessment of tick and tick-borne disease prevalence in a resource-poor area of South Africa and the impact of dipping strategy and acaricide resistance on endemic stability.
