A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 17 March 1978

Posted on March 16, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, the Perdeby, reported on UP’s drum majorettes.

The article highlighted the popularity of the drum majorettes at UP and also featured photo of the group practicing for a upcoming performance. The drum majorettes started to feature in the student life of Tukkie students from the late 1920’s onwards.  They performed for example in 1929 when the first Rag queen was inaugurated on Church square. For years to come the student newspaper and photographs feature some of their glamorous performances.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo and clipping collection in our holdings as featured above. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
