Executive Committee

Message from the Chairperson 2023

To my fellow UPAS members and executive committee, I feel incredibly honoured to lead this society that I adore so much in 2023. With the best EC team one could ask for, I believe that UPAS will reach new heights this year. We have lots of exciting activities planned and can't wait to meet all the aviation and space enthusiasts at Tuks.

Meet the Team

Chairperson: Jean du Plessis

I have always had a curious mind. As a kid I imagined what shooting off in a rocket and floating in zero gravity must feel like; I wanted to understand the wizardry that allow planes to fly. It's exactly this curiosity that lead me to study mechanical engineering.
At UPAS, I have found a home to nurture my enthusiasm for aerospace, and I feel honoured to serve this society as chair in my final year as an undergraduate.

Vice Chairperson & SEDS Representative: Benedict Tshimbalang

My name is Benedict Tshimbalang. 2nd year BSc Physics student. Majoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics, with an interest in quantum gravity and relativistic physics.

Secretary: Siyara Biseswar

I am a final year Mechanical Engineering student interested in aviation and aerospace engineering. I believe that space exploration is the greatest achievement of mankind and that there are constantly new developments and strides being made that are worth learning about.

Treasurer: Kavesan Naidoo

I am a 3rd year Mechanical Engineering student. I love the space industry and hope to one day be a part of it.

Social Media, Marketing & Transformation: Pranav Harrichund

I am a final year Mechanical Engineering student who is passionate about all things aero. I am honoured to be apart of the EC and look forward to a great year ahead!

Projects & Events Manager: Max Melvill

I'm a second year physics student with an obsession with space and rocketry which explains why my major is astrophysics.

"If it doesn't work, wing it"

Webmaster & Merchandising Manager: Ali Jafry

I am a 2nd year informatics student. There is something magical about flying high above the earth, seeing the world from a different perspective, and experiencing the rush of takeoff and landing. I love the technical aspects of aviation, from understanding the intricacies of aircraft design and engineering, to learning about the complex systems and procedures that keep planes flying safely.

Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” ― Leonardo da Vinci.
