Sustainable Development

At the University of Pretoria, sustainability is embedded in everything we do – from how we teach, research and innovate to how we support our people and steward our environment. We pursue a holistic, human-centred approach that advances social, economic and environmental wellbeing. As a global African university, we are locally responsive, continentally engaged and globally connected, with our work aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s broader development priorities. Our commitment goes beyond regulatory compliance; it is about creating long-term value, strengthening resilience and generating real impact for society. Whether we are developing future-fit graduates, producing knowledge that addresses pressing challenges, or partnering with communities to build a more just, inclusive and sustainable world, UP remains dedicated to meaningful, lasting impact – within our campuses and far beyond them.

Our Institutional Framework

Our commitment to sustainable development is guided by our institutional strategy which is consistent with global frameworks. These frameworks include the United Nations Sustainable Development goals and African Union Agenda 2063. They provide a shared vision and benchmarks that inform our desired impact.

Our Strategic Intent

Our strategic intent is to embed sustainable development deeply within our institutional strategy. We approach sustainability holistically and considering politico-legal, economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This integrated perspective guides our decisions and actions as we commit to just, inclusive, societal development with environmental protection and renewal.

Our Strategy into Action

In translating our strategy into action, we focus on our stewardship role as an institution and how we advance sustainable development beyond our institutional boundaries through our core functions of teaching and learning. This includes supporting people-centred initiatives, building resilience among our graduates and campus, and strengthening our role as an anchor institution committed to broader social and environmental well-being.
