The wound care unit is situated on the 4th floor and serves the whole academic hospital, not only the department of surgery.
The unit sees 600 – 700 patients per month, or around 8000 patients per year. This averages to around 30 patients every day. New patients comprises 40 % of their workload, and follow up cases 55%. They serve both inpatients and outpatients, as well as some private patients where authorisation was granted.
Patients are referred to the clinic for treatment, and are sent back to their treating physicians after completion of the treatment.
Teaching:
Undergraduate teaching on wound care takes place in Block 17 (Trauma) by surgery and plastic surgery, both lectures and a symposium.
SIC teaching consists of a session with plastic surgery.
Post-graduate teaching forms part of the academic program every second or third year.
Nursing training takes place in the clinic on a daily basis.
Maggot Laboratoy:
The maggot laboratory is situated in the department of Surgery (floor 7) and are overseen by Ms Johanna Legodi. We apply maggots on consultation from the treating physician, as it is an unregistered modality. Patients who are referred, are evaluated for suitability for treatment with maggots, and informed consent is signed before the treatment is started. Treatments are done as inpatients and outpatients.
