Welcome to the Department of Student Affairs. Whether you are a prospective student, a current student, or a parent or guardian supporting a young person’s journey, I am delighted that you are here.
Our purpose is clear and deeply held: we exist to empower students through holistic, student-centred care and development. This purpose guides how we think, how we lead, and how we serve. It is rooted in a simple but powerful belief—that student success is not accidental. It is cultivated through intentional care, inclusive systems, and development opportunities that recognise students as whole people with diverse strengths, aspirations, and challenges.
As Director, my vision for the Department is to be a research-driven, student-centred partner in the academic project of the University, fostering an inclusive campus environment where students are supported to thrive and to shape just, sustainable, and resilient futures. We do this by integrating evidence-informed practice with a strong ethic of care, ensuring that our work is both compassionate and effective.
The Department of Student Affairs plays a central role in the student journey beyond the classroom. Our mission is to deliver holistic care and transformative development opportunities through inclusive and innovative programmes, supported by professional, efficient, and responsive services. We focus on enabling student success across four interconnected pillars:
Holistic student support and success.
We coordinate and oversee a range of wraparound support programmes that address academic, financial, psychosocial, and developmental needs. These include flagship initiatives such as Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme, Dell Young Leaders, and Sikelela Scholars Programme. Through these programmes, we work to remove structural barriers to success and to ensure that talented students from diverse backgrounds are supported to persist, graduate, and transition successfully into the world beyond university.
Health, well-being, and resilience.
Student success is inseparable from well-being. Our services promote physical health, mental health, and emotional resilience, recognising that students can only flourish academically when they are well supported as people. We are committed to proactive, accessible, and stigma-free support that meets students where they are.
Leadership, citizenship, and personal development.
University is a formative space for leadership and civic growth. We create opportunities for students to develop as ethical leaders, engaged citizens, and change-makers—equipping them with the skills, values, and confidence to contribute meaningfully within and beyond the institution.
Inclusive, accessible, and vibrant student spaces.
We strive to create campus environments where every student feels a sense of belonging. This includes advancing accessibility, disability inclusion, and social integration, and cultivating spaces that are safe, vibrant, and reflective of our diverse student community.
My leadership approach is grounded in collaboration, listening, and accountability. I believe in working alongside students, families, staff, and partners to co-create solutions that are responsive to real needs. I also believe in the power of data and research to inform our decisions, while never losing sight of the human stories behind the numbers.
To our students: you belong here, and your success matters.
To parents and guardians: we see you as partners in this journey.
To all visitors: thank you for taking the time to learn about our work.
I invite you to explore our services, engage with our programmes, and join us as we work together to empower students to thrive at UP.
