The Department was instituted in 1960 as Department of Speech Therapy and Audiology (for a brief history click here). This name did not reflect the scope of the training and the profession however since students were trained to manage all human communication disorders (pathology) in all age groups - speech, voice, language and hearing disorders.
Today audiologists and speech-language-therapists are trained in the Department of Communication Pathology and the affiliated Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This Department plays a leading role in training, research and community work for these professions in South Africa and the qualification is recognised worldwide.
