In her new book, Prof Lee investigates how Hong Kong has transformed itself from a 'shoppers' and capitalists' paradise' into a 'city of protests' at the frontline of a global anti-China backlash. Moving beyond the tropes of an ideological conflict between a liberal capitalist democratizing city and its Communist authoritarian sovereign, Lee's book reveals how the post-1997 China-Hong Kong contestation offers rich insights into the politics and political economy of China as a global force.
