With the challenge to provide cost-effective broadband connectivity in Africa, many are looking at 5G to be a saviour. Beside 5G providing massive traffic, instant information, higher bandwidth and lower latency, it is supposed to revolutionise the way we live, work and commute in cyber-secure Africa through new-spectrum opportunities for business, fundamental new applications, smarter cities and transportation, all hopefully in a Cognitive Networked environment.

This one-day workshop addressed the challenges and research opportunities in 5G and how and what industry and academia are doing to address this.

The Pretoria 5G Summit, which was held on the 3rd of May 2017, was co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society, University of Pretoria, South African Institute of Electrical Engineers and the National Research Foundation.
