BEd Honour's Programme

Applications are subject to selection.

  1. Requirements for admission

A candidate can be admitted if he/she holds one of the following:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree and a teacher’s diploma/Postgraduate Certificate in Education [e.g BA + HED]; or
  2. A four-year composite degree in Education [e.g. BA(Ed)]; or
  3. An M+4 appropriate teacher’s diploma subject to specific approval and an appropriate Advanced Diploma in Education; or
  4. Another academic qualification and appropriate prior learning, considered equivalent by the Dean for admission to a specific package.
  1. Selection procedure

Selection is based on:

  1. Meeting the minimum academic requirements required for admission;
  2. Previous academic performance;
  3. Applicable academic and/or teaching background;
  4. Availability of supervision for the required research project;
  5. Proven academic potential which may include academic communication and computer application skills;
  6. Additionally, an interview may be requested;
  7. The requirements of professional registration bodies;
  8. The discretion of the head of department, to consider the available supervision capacity in the department.
  1. Duration
  1. The programme may be completed over a period of one or two years;
  2. The programme must be completed within a maximum period of three years;
  3. Subject to exceptions approved by the Dean, on the recommendation of the Head of the Department, a student may not sit for an examination for the honours degree more than twice in the same module.
  1. Degree with distinction

The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who has obtained an
average of at least 75% with a minimum of 70% in each module.

  1. Research project

A research project is compulsory and must be handed in for examination
as prescribed by the particular department.

Life Sciences Education, Physical Sciences Education Package coordinator
Students may choose to specialise in Life Sciences education, Physical Sciences education, Mathematics education or Design and Technology education. This degree is not focused on improving the subject content knowledge (Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics or Design and Technology) of students, but to provide them with the skills that are required for curriculum development in these specialisations.

Assessment and Quality Assurance Package coordinator
The BEd(Hons) Assessment and Quality Assurance in Education and Training offers prospective assessors and quality assurers a comprehensive overview of the foundations of educational assessment, testing, measurement and evaluation. It is a generic programme that can be applied to all learning areas. The academic background the programme offers, equips students thoroughly with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue such a focus at master’s level.

Computer Integrated Education Package coordinator

The purpose of the BEd(Hons) Computer integrated Education programme is to enable the candidate to:

  • Explore digital-based instructional and cognitive tools in the field of education;
  • Design and develop digital-based instructional and cognitive tools for application in various learning areas;
  • Explore digital-based techniques that can be applied in assessment of learners.
