Prof Joji Mercier

Anne (Joji) Mercier is a full professor in the Department of Physiology at the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria. She obtained her MBChB (Medicine) degree in 2004, after which she spent a few years in pre-hospital emergency and aviation medicine. After obtaining her PhD, she continued investigating novel anticancer compounds at the preclinical level. Her expertise lies in cellular apoptosis, autophagy, cytoskeletal components, and intracellular and extracellular cancer signalling. Prof Mercier’s research also encompasses broader applications of these candidate compounds, such as radiosensitisation of cancer cells. Prof Mercier leads an active research group, supervising BSc Honours, MSc, and PhD candidates. Her research over the years has been published in accredited international peer-reviewed scientific journals. She has had the privilege of working with very strong national and international collaborators, particularly Prof L. Lafanechère from the Université Grenoble Alps in France, over the years.
