UP Law's Professor Dire Tladi appointed as First Vice-Chair of International Law Commission

The Faculty of Law (UP Law) at the University of Pretoria (UP) announces with pride and extends its congratulations to Professor Dire Tladi on his election as the First Vice-Chair of the International Law Commission (ILC) for the 72nd Session on Monday, 26 April 2021.  Tladi has previously served as Chair of the Drafting Committee (2013) and General Rapporteur (2014) of the ILC. He is also currently its Special Rapporteur on Peremptory Norms of General International Law (Jus Cogens).  The current session of the Commission is being held in Geneva from 26 April to 6 August 2021.

Tladi’s distinguished eminency includes being the South African Research Chair in International Constitutional Law, Professor in the Department of Public Law at UP, Research Fellow of the Institute for Comparative Law and International Law in Africa (ICLA), and Member of the Institut de Droit International.  He has served as the Principal State Law Adviser for International Law for the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation and Legal Counsellor to the South Africa Mission to the United Nations.

In her congratulatory note, a proud Dean Professor Elsabe Schoeman wished Tladi well with the additional responsibilities and expressed UP Law’s appreciation for his exemplary contributions to maintaining UP Law’s claim to fame as ‘Africa’s Global Law Faculty’.
