My Journey as an Exchange Student in Luthuania

Posted on June 26, 2024

Studying abroad had always been a dream of mine, and when the opportunity to study in Lithuania came up, I knew I had to seize it. As a student with a physical disability from South Africa, I was eager to experience academic enrichment, cultural immersion, and personal growth in a new environment. The journey was filled with challenges, but the positive experiences far outweighed them, leaving me with memories and lessons that will last a lifetime.

My main goal for studying abroad was to expand my academic horizons and immerse myself in a different culture. I wanted to challenge myself, gain new perspectives, and grow both personally and academically. During my time in Lithuania, beyond academics, I formed strong friendships with local and international students, which enriched my experience and provided a robust support network.

The experience significantly boosted my confidence. Living independently in a foreign country taught me resilience and adaptability. I developed new skills, such as learning to navigate an unfamiliar city and communicating effectively despite language barriers. Professionally, this experience broadened my worldview and prepared me for a global career.

One particularly meaningful moment was participating in a traditional Lithuanian festival. It was a vibrant celebration of culture and history, and being part of it made me feel deeply connected to the community. Another cherished memory is the weekly lunch outings, where we shared our experiences and supported each other through the challenges of studying abroad.

For students with disabilities considering studying abroad, I would say: go for it! Embrace the adventure, be proactive in seeking support, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. The challenges are real, but the rewards are immense. Additional to my scholarship I received a financial aid which was instrumental in making my study abroad possible. They covered my travel expenses, and additional costs related to accessibility, such as hiring a caregiver.

The application processes were straightforward but required thorough preparation. I had to submit academic records, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. The support from my home university was invaluable in guiding me through the process. The scholarships required me to maintain good academic standing and to participate in cultural exchange activities. These expectations encouraged me to engage fully with my academic and social environment in Lithuania.

My first impression of Europe was awe-inspiring. The rich history, diverse cultures, and stunning architecture captivated me from the moment I arrived. I primarily used public transportation, which was quite accessible in Lithuania. In cases where public transport was not suitable, I relied on wheelchair-accessible taxis. My exchange program also arranged for some private transport for longer journeys.

Living in the heart of Kaunas was an incredible experience. The city centre, with its vibrant atmosphere, historical buildings, and bustling cafes, provided a perfect blend of modernity and tradition. Navigating the city was relatively easy, thanks to its accessible infrastructure and helpful locals. I particularly enjoyed strolling through Laisvės Alėja, a pedestrian street lined with shops and restaurants, which became my go-to spot for relaxation and socializing.

One of my favourite travel experiences was visiting Trakai. The picturesque landscape, the historic Trakai Island Castle, and the serene lakes made it a magical place. Exploring this city, with its unique blend of cultures and history, was an unforgettable experience. Another highlight was exploring the historic city of Vilnius, with its cobblestone streets and vibrant cultural scene.

My journey as an exchange student in Lithuania was transformative. It taught me resilience, broadened my perspectives, and helped me build lasting networks. The challenges I faced were real, but they were overshadowed by the positive experiences and the growth I achieved. I encourage other students with disabilities to pursue such opportunities, as the rewards are truly life-changing.
