Steve Cornelius obtained B Iuris and LLB degrees from the University of South Africa and an LLD degree on the Law of Contract from the University of Pretoria and is admitted to practise as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa. He is professor and Head of the Department of Private Law at the University of Pretoria. He is also Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Law and Co-director of the Centre for Sports and Entertainment Law. Professor Cornelius is a Fellow of the Association of Arbitrators of Southern Africa, member of the South African Academy of Science and Art and member of the Independent Doping Hearing Panel of the South African Institute for Drug-free Sport. Professor Cornelius joined the Department of Private Law as Professor in 2010 after serving for eleven years in the Department of Private Law at the University of Johannesburg, where he rose to the rank of Professor in 2007 and Head of the Department of Private Law in 2008. Before that, he served for eleven years in the Department of Justice, briefly as a Public Prosecutor and mostly as a Legal Officer in the Branch: Legislation Research, where he played an important part in the drafting of regulations required for the functioning of the Human Rights Commission, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Special Investigating Unit. He has contributed chapters to thirteen books published in the Netherlands, Greece England and Scotland. He has also authored or co-authored ten books published locally in South Africa, including Principles of the Interpretation of Contracts in South Africa (the third edition of which has just appeared in 2016), Introduction to Sports Contracts in South Africa and Introduction to Sports Law in South Africa. He has published 74 articles and commentaries on Contract Law and Sport Law in notable South African and international law journals. His research has been cited with approval in judgments of high courts in South Africa, the Kingdom of Swaziland and the Republic of Namibia and rulings of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland, as well as by legal counsel appearing before these courts. He is the Editor in Chief of the International Journal for Private Law and serves on the editorial advisory boards of the International Sports Law Journal and the International Sports Law Review Pandektis. Prof Cornelius also served a term as the editor of the University of Pretoria’s own law journal De Jure and oversaw its transition to an open access online journal. Under his editorship, De Jure also accepted and published the first ever academic law article written in Sepedi. Prof Cornelius has presented 42 papers at international conferences and has lectured at various institutions, such as the TMC Asser Institute in The Hague and the WJH Mulier Institute in Den Bosch, the Netherlands, Marquette University and Ithaca College in the USA, Robert Gordon University and Stirling University in Scotland, Semmelweis University in Hungary and Anglia Ruskin University in England. Some of the postgraduate students who studied under his supervision, are now lecturers at Anglia Ruskin University in England, Lagos State University in Nigeria, the University of Stellenbosch, the University of the Free State, the University of Johannesburg, the University of South Africa and the University of Pretoria.
