Vacancies: Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbents will be responsible for:

  • Teach in at least two of the following modules offered by the Department of Private Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in order to meet the needs of the Department: Delict, Education Law, Law of Things/Property Law, Legal Pluralism, Intellectual Property Law and Private International Law;
  • Conduct academic and scholarly research;
  • Have an in-depth understanding of specialisation to enable development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field;
  • Supervise masters and doctoral students;
  • Mentor students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Perform academic administration and management;
  • Perform other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer:

  • LLM (preferably by full dissertation) or LLD degree in one of the abovementioned fields in Private Law;
  • In the absence of a LLD degree, registration for a doctoral degree in one of the abovementioned fields in Private Law with proof of substantive progress;
  • At least four years’ teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least four substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books.

Associate Professor

  • LLD degree in one of the abovementioned fields in Private Law;
  • At least five years’ teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least fifteen substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision; and
  • A suitable NRF rating and/or identified by peers as an independent established researcher at, at least a national level.

Professor

  • LLD degree in one of the abovementioned fields in Private Law;
  • At least eight years’ teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least twenty five substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books; 
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision; and
  • A suitable NRF rating and/or identified by peers as an independent established researcher with some international recognition.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

Senior Lecturer:

  • Applicable practical professional experience;
  • Postgraduate supervision/teaching experience;
  • Participation in academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Ability to plan and initiate discipline related research
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team;
  • Appropriate communication skills.

Associate Professor:

  • Participation in national and international academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Proven ability to independently plan and initiate discipline-related research;
  • National and some international recognition in own field of expertise by peers in the discipline;
  • An established network of collaborative researchers;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Appropriate communication skills.

Professor:

  • Participation in national and international academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Proven ability to independently plan and initiate discipline-related research;
  • National and international recognition in own field of expertise by peers in the discipline;
  • Ability to prepare proposals and submissions to external bodies for funding and accreditation purposes;
  • An established national and international network of collaborative researchers;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Appropriate communication skills.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
