PSANA EXCO Meeting

1. Welcome to new members
Ronald welcomed all the new committee members of PSANA.
2. Voting/nominating new members and placement of current members Nominees are as follows:
Melissa Naidoo - Departmental Liason officer
Paula Medronho - Marketing
3. Meeting with Prof. Mike Wingfield
Prof. Mike Wingfield was pleased to see PSANA rising and suggested that PSANA get a representative on the cenate.
4. Meeting with Prof. Robin Crewe
A meeting is scheduled on 16 March 2004. A meeting with Callie Pretorius will be scheduled after the meeting with Prof. Robin Crewe.
5. Meeting with Prof. Cloete
Prof. Cloete suggested:
a) PSANA should arrange a social tea for the School of Biological and Natural Sciences. The different departments should sponser the tea and cookies. Prizes won by students should be announced at tea.
b) PSANA should be represented at the meeting of the School of Biological Science.
c) PSANA expand to all the post graduate students in the University of Pretoria in the next 2 years.
6. Expanding PSANA
There was a suggestion, that if PSANA would expand that the current committee would turn into the exco committee with a number of small committees. There will be a vote on this issue at the bosberaad.
7. Portfolio in SRC
PSANA decided not to have a portfolio at the SRC because there are too many politics involved.
8. University focus
Due to financial constrains, the University focus will focus more on post-graduate students than pre-graduate student. Therefore, PSANA is trying to get more rights for post-graduate students e.g. parking.
9. Publishing of articles
PSANA wants a student to be paid if he/she publish a paper in a journal. The amount to be paid out should be according to the rating of the paper. The money must go into a student account. The student can use the money for example labwork, fieldtrip and congresses. PSANA will decide on the bosberaad how the account will be controlled so that the student can used the money instead of the promoter.
10. Members of PSANA
Four PSANA committee members gave a short introduction of PSANA at the honours technique course. Several students want to be part of PSANA. The new students will be added to the list server.
11. Dr. Daya Reddy report back
PSANA arrange a meeting with Dr. Reddy on 31 March at 16:00. Dr. Reddy will give a talk for approximately 50 min. PSANA want to discuss issue such as the late payment of bursaries and the low inflation rate of the bursaries. All PSANA members should attend the meeting.
12. Meeting with Dr Karen Lazenby-CSC/KDS
- Suggested that PSANA must get more involved on Open Day.
- The University has a database of the top 700 students in South Africa. The main aim of UP is to get the students to a post graduate level at UP. They want PSANA to give the students hands on experience the day before the Open Day.
- They also going to help with the final year symposium to produce a booklet.
13. PSANA bosberaad
PSANA bosberaad is on 12th of March 2004. At 9:00, there will be a photosession for the portfolios. Please dress formally.
14. PSANA website
- James is still busy with the website.
- The list server of PSANA should be updated. An email will be send out and everyone who still wants to be a member must reply to the email.
- PSANA wants to have a direct link from the UP web page and all the departments to PSANA.
- The new website will also have links for job opportunities.
- If you have any interesting information for the website, send it to James.
15. Web page design
Anneke Prins showed James the principles behind webpage design. PSANA must pay Anneke R200 for her work. Her student number is 9708710.
16. PSANA course/workshop
A welfare course will be presented on 23 March. The main topic of the course is people skills. The cost is R800 for the whole group. All PSANA committee members should attend the course.
17. Money for BioAgric house
R960 was deposited into the BioAgric house account.
18. Tukkie varia
Freddie will get more info on the magazine to put in some information on PSANA
19. BioAgric Action cricket
There was a suggestion that every department form an action cricket team (student & lectures).
