Lecture: Conceptualising South Africa's National Interest

Before taking up his present position, Mr Shaik served as the South African Consul-General to Hamburg, Germany, and later as the South African Ambassador to the Democratic People's Republic of Algeria (1999-2003). Upon his return from Algeria, he served as the Special Advisor to the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, and as Head of Policy Research and Analysis in the same Ministry. Mr Schaik is a qualified optometrist, having studied at the University of Durban-Westville, where he also lectured and headed the Department of Optometry.
