Dear UP Staff and Students,

As we approach the end of 2024, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude and warm wishes to each of you on behalf of the University of Pretoria. In my two months as Vice-Chancellor and Principal, I have been deeply impressed by the solid foundation upon which this institution stands—a foundation that not only supports but inspires future growth and innovation.

The University of Pretoria plays a vital role, both locally and globally, as a beacon of academic excellence and societal impact. However, as we celebrate our achievements, we must also look ahead with a commitment to continuous improvement. Progress requires reflection and the firm pursuit of excellence. By consistently assessing and enhancing our efforts, we ensure that our institution remains a leader in education, research, and community engagement.

Our people are at the heart of everything we do. We must prioritise the well-being and development of both our staff and students. This means creating an environment where everyone feels valued, cared for, and empowered to thrive.

As we embark on the development of a new strategic plan, our path forward will be guided by key priorities:

• Enhancing a people-centric approach to university operations and culture, which I term “human-centeredness.”
• Elevating UP’s global standing and influence.
• Positioning UP as a global intellectual leader on African matters, for Africa and the world.
• Leveraging technology to advance our academic and operational goals.
• Strengthening UP’s contributions to societal development and community engagement.

To our dedicated staff and talented students, thank you for your support and commitment throughout the year. You are the driving force behind UP’s success and its bright future.
