Lights, camera, action!

The Department of Institutional Advancement (DIA) is pleased to announce dates for training sessions on media and social media, branding, events management and protocol. They are available to all staff members who work, or might be called upon to work, on media, communications or social media projects.

The University of Pretoria (UP) features in the news daily. This could entail an expert being asked for their professional insight or views on anything from the economy and climate change to the behaviour of house flies. This depends on the events taking place locally or globally on a particular day.
The media team at the DIA also works with academics to ensure that their research is highlighted in mass media. The team distributes media releases and sets up interviews for academics with local TV and radio stations, and sometimes with international media.

The more regularly UP's name appears in the media, nationally and internationally, the more people learn about it. This helps build our brand and reputation, while also showcasing our scientific expertise. The benefits of this are multifaceted: increased brand awareness helps UP attract research funding, postgraduate students and senior academics.

The training sessions provide UP staff with the basic information (and expert tips) they need to effectively represent the University in the media and on social media platforms.

The following training courses will be presented:
Writing for media press releases and op-eds: 5 April
Science communication: 19 April
Media training – handling interviews: 10 May
Social media introduction: 17 May
Events Management: 31 May
Brand training introduction: 7 June
Protocol: 14 June

Interested parties will be informed of each session's locations and start times. Please be aware that we can accommodate only 30 people per session.

RSVP by 28 March 2024 to Sithembinkosi Tlale via email at [email protected] for the session(s) you would like to attend.
