The University acknowledges with regret the unfortunate scenes that unfolded at our Hatfield campus earlier today. The South African Police Services (SAPS) intervened, after efforts were made to engage the striking staff, who illegally disrupted university operations, intimidated students and staff and damaged university property. Our priority is always the safety and well-being of all staff and students.
We strongly condemn the illegal disruption of activities on our campus. We want to assure our community that we will take relevant action against any individuals found to be involved in these incidents.
The university's application for an interdict against striking workers, aimed at preventing them from disrupting university operations, will be heard in court tomorrow.
In the meantime, Hatfield classes remain online. We urge all students to continue monitoring ClickUP (https://clickup.up.ac.za) for any changes to their academic activities. If you are unsure about the arrangements, please don't hesitate to contact the relevant Dean’s office by sending an email to the faculty email address as listed on the UP website or such other office as may be communicated by the Faculty.
We are committed to resolving labour disputes through constructive dialogue and within the limits of the law. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the UP community during this challenging period.
