The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:
Caves of the Ape-Men: South Africa’s Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site by R J Clarke and T C Partridge
This book is the first to explore in-depth the fossil and archaeological wealth of Sterkfontein and Swartkrans in the UNESCO Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, near to Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa. Combined with other sites such as Kromdraai and Drimolen, they have been pivotal in documenting the origin of our species. It also tells us about the animals with which our earliest ancestors competed for survival and of the caverns and infills that preserved their skeletal and dental remains for millions of years.
